Body camera footage shows police shooting outside northwest Miami-Dade market

Authorities released body camera footage Thursday from a police shooting that they say left a man in critical condition.

Miami-Dade police officers responded to reports of a man shooting a gun into the air several times for no apartment reason outside Los Primos supermarket on Northwest 95th Street near 31st Avenue on Sept. 29 of last year, and when they got to the scene, things became even more dangerous, forcing them to open fire.

A responding officer noticed bullet casings outside the store when he arrived.

The officer retrieved his rifle from his car and then noticed the man, later identified as Selvin Figueroa Martinez, had exited the store, and he told him to get down.

But Figueroa appeared to reach for his waistband, and that’s when the officer began shooting, firing around 10 shots.

The police officer, identified as Joshua Rodriguez, was led into a cruiser as the investigation began.

The state attorney’s office determined his decision to open fire was justified and they have now closed out the case.

Authorities said Figueroa was shot four times including in the chest and lower back and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he survived.

Jail records show he now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
