A 73-year-old Ocala man was killed on Thursday after his car veered off a local roadway and struck a tree.
The fatal crash occurred at around 4:55 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, near the intersection of Baseline Road and NE 24th Street.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a Toyota Corolla was heading southbound on Baseline Road, just south of the NE 24th intersection, when the vehicle left the roadway and traveled onto the west grassy shoulder.
FHP stated that the car then briefly traveled southbound on the west shoulder before entering the nearby woods and colliding with a tree.
The elderly driver and sole occupant of the car sustained fatal injuries, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue personnel. His name was not released by FHP.
A trooper noted in the report that the cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
