One person is dead after a shooting in Weeki Wachee, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies responded to a home on Scherin Street at 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, in regards to a shooting.
Arriving at the home, deputies found a man who had been shot multiple times.
According to deputies, the suspect, ES, 23, called 911 immediately to report the shooting, and deputies arrived within three minutes and confirmed that the victim, KM, 40, was dead.
During an investigation, detectives learned that S and M had previously worked together and had seen each other earlier that evening at a bar in Spring Hill.
S told detectives they left the bar around 2 a.m., and M offered him a ride home after his ride had left.
At S’s home, the two men talked for a little bit before M tried to leave, but he had experienced issues starting his vehicle, deputies said.
While checking the vehicle, the two began to argue about a dog S had taken in during their previous employment.
According to deputies, S said M asked to see the dog, but he refused. S then told detectives that M began making verbal threats toward him and his family and implied that he was armed.
S was already carrying a firearm, but felt threatened and went inside, unlocked a safe in his bedroom, and got a rifle and a loaded magazine, HCSO said.
S returned outside and confronted M in the driveway.
Deputies said S told investigators that during the confrontation, M opened his vehicle’s trunk and reached inside, prompting S to fire multiple rounds, believing M was getting a weapon.
HCSO said no firearm belonging to M was recovered from the scene.
While detectives were asking S questions, S provided several conflicting statements regarding the events and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
According to HCSO, based on the evidence and statements, S was arrested and charged with second-degree murder with a firearm.
