One person is dead and another is injured after two vehicles collided Friday afternoon in Winter Haven.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 3:54 p.m. at the intersection of Winter Lake Road and Camellia Drive.
Deputies said a 2017 Subaru was stopped and waiting to turn left across the westbound lanes of Winter Lake Road. The driver began to turn but failed to yield to an oncoming 2006 Mercedes.
PCSO said the driver of the Mercedes attempted to avoid the crash by braking heavily, but the two vehicles collided.
The Subaru was pushed northeast and spun before hitting a large stone wall. The Mercedes also spun and stopped in the outside lane of Winter Lake Road.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and the airbags deployed in both vehicles, the sheriff’s office said.
A nearby deputy who saw the crash along with Polk County Fire Rescue personnel reportedly began lifesaving efforts.
The driver of the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing.
