Emergency crews responded to a tragic scene late Thursday morning after a vehicle was discovered submerged in a canal near the intersection of 50th Street North and Cheetham Hill Boulevard.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) units were dispatched at approximately 11:35 a.m. following a 911 call from a passerby who reported seeing a car in the water. The caller stated they had not witnessed the crash but came upon the scene moments after it likely occurred.
Upon arrival, the first PBCFR engine crew found a single vehicle underwater, with only the roof visible above the surface. Rescue swimmers were deployed within two minutes of arrival and quickly gained access to the submerged vehicle.
One individual was recovered from inside the car. Despite rapid efforts, the person was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
A full rescue dive team conducted a thorough search of the surrounding area to ensure no other victims were involved. No additional patients were found.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) has taken over the investigation and will be conducting a full crash analysis to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
