1 dead after ‘construction-related’ accident at Clearwater Publix; 2nd worker recovering

One person was killed, and another was injured Monday following a construction accident at the site of a new Publix in Clearwater.

The Clearwater Police Department had multiple officers in the area off Missouri Avenue South Monday afternoon. Police said the initial call came in around 4:55 p.m.

A spokesperson for the City of Clearwater confirmed it was a “construction-related” accident.

Two workers suffered serious injuries after a scissor lift collapsed. Both people were taken to local hospitals as trauma alert patients.

According to officials, one of the patients died less than an hour after arriving at Morton Plant Hospital. The other person was thought to have injuries that are non-life-threatening.

Authorities were still working to notify the workers’ families Monday night. Their names were not released.

Caution tape was stretched in front of the Publix building Monday as police investigated. A sign out front read, “Coming soon.”

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified and will be investigating the incident further.
