RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A fight inside a Riviera Beach community turned deadly Monday night when gunfire erupted, leaving one person dead and four injured.
According to the Riviera Beach Police Chief Michael Coleman, the confrontation began at 6:15 p.m. as a fight, which escalated when someone pulled out a gun, shooting two.
Following the initial gunfire, the suspect reportedly ran off the property, attempting to carjack multiple people and shooting more victims as a result.
In total, the spree shooting left one person dead, two others in critical condition, and two more with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the violence appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Earlier in the day, dozens of police vehicles and fire trucks surrounded the apartment complex, with crime-scene tape surrounding the area.
A portion of MLK Blvd. remains shut down in both directions as detectives continue processing the scene.
Around 9 p.m., Riviera Beach Police Chief Michael Coleman held a press conference sharing additional details, including that a person of interest was detained in St. Lucie County by state officials. The person of interest was set to be interviewed within the coming hours.
“Based on what we’ve seen and witnesses it was just individuals that they’ve seen hanging out throughout the day,” Coleman said. “They knew each other and for whatever reason something happened, whatever turned throughout those individuals conversation led to gunfire.”
Around 11 p.m. many residents who live inside the impacted neighborhood were unable to return home as officials continued their investigation. The chief said the investigations was expected to continue into the early morning hours but that residents would be allowed to return home before then.
