One person was killed in a car accident and a woman was arrested following a chase and crash Thursday afternoon on Florida’s Turnpike in Broward County, authorities confirmed.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies were assisting Coconut Creek police with a stolen vehicle investigation out of Fort Lauderdale when the driver of the stolen pickup truck struck a marked BSO unit and then a marked Coconut Creek police unit in the area of Sample Road and the Turnpike shortly after 4 p.m.
Deputies said law enforcement officers then began chasing after the vehicle, which hopped onto the southbound lanes of the Turnpike.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers confirmed they then assisted authorities on the Turnpike, where the chase ended in a crash that left one person dead.
Video taken at the scene shows twisted metal across the Turnpike near Mile Marker 58 after a sedan was left crushed in the roadway and a white Ford F-250 had slammed into a concrete barrier.
“Both the BSO deputy and Coconut Creek Police officer whose units were struck by the stolen vehicle were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries not expected to be life-threatening,” a BSO spokesperson said in a news release. “Following the conclusion of the incident on the Turnpike, deputies arrested an adult female who was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries.”
The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and deputies said they are still working to determine what charges she will be facing.
The fatal crash shut down all southbound lanes on the Turnpike from Sunrise Boulevard to Interstate 595 for hours, leading to miles of backups and heavy congestion on surrounding roads.
All lanes have since reopened.
