1 killed, 3 hospitalized after driver illegally tries passing car on single-lane highway

NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) – One person is dead and another three are critically injured in a head-on collision between Newberry and Alachua Sunday night. The crash happened on CR-235, South of NW 204th Street between Newberry and Alachua, around 6 p.m.

According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, one driver tried to pass another in a no-passing zone, crossing a double yellow line. They collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction head-on.

A 61-year-old man from Crystal River was in the passenger seat of an SUV and was killed. The driver, a 42-year-old woman from Alachua, and another 14-year-old passenger were transported to UF Health Shands with critical injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old man from Old Town, was also transported to UF Health Shands with critical injuries.

FHP Troopers did not specify which vehicle was at fault.
