One person was killed and three others injured when a vehicle hit a motorcycle and then caused three other vehicles to crash on International Speedway Boulevard near DeLand on Saturday afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The 1:40 p.m. crash at the intersection of International Speedway Boulevard and West Parkway east of DeLand killed a 73-year-old motorcyclist from Middleburg, investigators with FHP said.
According to FHP’s Lt. Tara Crescenzi, the motorcyclist was eastbound on International Speedway Boulevard and was stopped in the inside lane at the traffic light at West Parkway behind three vehicles ― a Jeep Cherokee, a Jeep Wrangler and a Ford Mustang.
A Nissan Rogue, driven by a 52-year-old St. Augustine woman, also headed east, failed to stop at the light and struck the motorcycle from behind, Crescenzi said.
The Nissan Rogue then hit the back of the Jeep Cherokee, pushing it into the rear of the Jeep Wrangler, that then struck the Ford Mustang, troopers said.
The motorcyclist was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he was pronounced dead, troopers said.
The St. Augustine woman was taken to AdventHealth DeLand with minor injuries.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, a 74-year-old man from DeLand, and a 67-year woman, a passenger, also of DeLand, were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with minor injuries, Crescenzi said.
The driver of the Jeep Wrangler, a 35-year-old man from Ocala, and his passenger, a 28-year-old Ocala woman, were not injured.
The driver of the Ford Mustang, a 58-year-old DeLand man, was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation, troopers said.
