10 injured in 5-vehicle Christmas night crash on Lillian Bridge in Escambia County

10 injured in 5-vehicle Christmas night crash on Lillian Bridge in Escambia County

A five-vehicle crash on a notoriously dangerous bridge is once again raising concerns about driver safety.

It happened Thursday night. Three people were seriously hurt in the accident on the Lillian Bridge in Escambia County.

Several more people are being treated for minor injuries.

Now, residents who live in the area are calling for a change.

Shelly Burch is the manager of the Crazy Horse Cafe.

For 25 years, the restaurant has sat right down the road from the Lillian Bridge which connects Escambia County, Florida, to Baldwin County, Alabama.

“I’d say within a mile from Crazy Horse in either direction, there’s probably a wreck every other day,” Crazy Horse Cafe manager Shelly Burch said.

During those years, Burch has seen her fair share of tragedies.

“There are a lot of wrecks. Since I’ve been here, I’ve seen somebody get decapitated,” Burch said. “A motorcycle ran up this pole, somebody hit our sign twice, and a Mustang was up the pole. Over by the liquor store there’s been a wreck. There were fatalities.”

The common denominator, she says, is a combination of high speeds, dense fog, and a sharp curve.

Just Thursday night, 10 people were injured in the five-car pileup on the bridge.

It happened around 11:35 on Christmas night, during heavily foggy conditions.

A 31-year-old Georgia man crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the collision caused a chain reaction crash.

It’s still unclear what exactly caused the driver to crash, but Burch says something needs to change.

“They go quite fast. Even in the rain and the fog, it doesn’t slow them down,” Burch said. “We should have a caution light or something to let people know there’s a bridge, there’s a curve, or something.”

“You get there, and there’s a lot of fog coming off the bridge. Something stating it’s dangerous. But there’s nothing out here,” Burch said. “There’s nothing out here on either side, the Florida side or the Alabama side.”

According to the Florida Highway Patrol’s crash report of the incident, investigators are waiting on blood test results from the driver.
