Authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting during a dangerous confrontation in a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood that sent a 15-year-old to the hospital.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred during a confrontation with the teen at a park near Southwest 113th Avenue and Southwest 221st Street on Thursday afternoon.
Investigators said it started while deputies were responding to reports of a group of juveniles who were making threats while wielding a weapon at a park near Southwest 113th Avenue and 216th Street.
Upon arriving to the area, deputies spotted four juveniles, including the 15-year-old, who was reportedly armed.
“They found them nearby, and it was a group of juveniles, which they’re all in custody,” said MDSO Assistant Sheriff Fernand Charles.
Authorities said the teen brandished the firearm at deputies.
“Not just a firearm, a firearm with an extended clip,” said Charles. “A confrontation ensued. As a result, one of our deputies discharged his service weapon, striking the subject in the lower extremities.”
That teen was grazed in the ankle and transported to Jackson South Medical Center in stable condition.
7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where authorities cordoned off the area around a home as they investigated the incident.
The boy’s family is now demanding answers about what happened.
“My nephew is doing well. I don’t know about no firearms or whatever,” said Asia Spann, the boy’s aunt.
The boy’s aunt told 7News the deputy was not driving in a marked car and doesn’t believe the shooting was justified.
“I want answers. I want to know why did they come with an unknown car, jump out and went to shooting,” said Spann. “That’s what the witness is saying.”
Authorities said it’s dangerous for children to brandish weapons of any kind.
“At the end of the day, we need to be mindful of what our children are doing day in and day out, because it is 3:30 in the afternoon, a 15-year-old is walking around with a firearm, which is not legal or acceptable by any means,” said Charles.
Three other teens were taken into custody, but they have not been charged as of Friday morning. It is also unclear whether the 15-year-old will be facing charges once he is released from the hospital.
As is the case with all deputy-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
