15-year-old killed when trooper uses PIT maneuver to stop speeding driver

A 15-year-old boy was killed after a chase in Pasco County ended with a car going into a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened early on Sunday at around 3:45 a.m. just outside of New Port Richey.

A state trooper was on patrol on State Route 54 when a Chevy Traverse sped by at 74 mph in a 45 mph zone, FHP said.

The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, eventually reaching 115 mph.

East of Old County Road 54, the trooper successfully conducted a PIT maneuver on the vehicle, disabling it as the car spun off the roadway and then into a utility pole and a tree.

Both the driver and passenger are 15-year-old boys from New Port Richey. FHP said neither was wearing seatbelts and both had alcoholic beverages with them.

They were transported to the hospital with serious injuries, where the passenger later died.

Charges are pending for the driver as FHP continues investigating the incident.
