18-year-old Florida woman killed by ex-boyfriend while on FaceTime

The family of a teenager shot to death in her own West Palm Beach home is remembering her as a “beautiful, young soul.”

“She was as intelligent as she was beautiful,” said Ricky Aiken.

Aiken is the uncle of 18-year-old Kelvi McCray.

“She had a flare for life, a flare that still inspires us today,” Aiken said.

Aiken said McCray was in college, studying cosmetology and already running her own hairstyling business.

“She loved making her friends and the young women around her more beautiful,” Aiken said. “That was a gift she had, to make everything around her beautiful.”

Police said McCray was shot in her home on 13th Street around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday night.

Investigators said her ex-boyfriend, 19-year-old Keisean Shaw, shot her while she was FaceTiming friends.

They said he then turned the gun on himself.

A neighbor heard the shots and called 911.

“When I ran to the house, I couldn’t get in,” the neighbor said. “The mother let me in. And by that time, this girl, she … she’s on the floor.”

“We don’t know whether he forced his way in,” said Mike Jachles, public information officer for the West Palm Beach police said of Shaw. “At this point, detectives have not said what he was doing, how he got in the house.”

Police said Shaw had been living with McCray even after she ended the relationship in January.

Family said McCray let him stay there because he had no place else to go.

They also said that the arrangement ended Tuesday when Shaw threatened McCray with a gun.

She called police, who tried to apprehend him, but he got away.

Investigators said Shaw then returned to the home Wednesday night with the gun.

“What would drive you to feeling so hopeless about this one relationship that you probably wouldn’t even remember in a few years, became the crux of your life and the destroyer of futures and potential?” Aiken asked.

Despite the tragedy, Aiken said he and his family refuse to let Shaw win and refuse to be devastated by McCray’s death.

“My family is rejoicing,” he said. “We’re rejoicing at the life that Kelvi lived. We’re rejoicing at the impact she’s made.”
