A 19-year-old man was killed early Monday morning in a hit-and-run crash while riding his motorcycle, according to Fort Myers police.
The fatal incident happened just after 2 a.m. along Winkler Avenue in front of the Village Creek Apartments. Witnesses say the motorcyclist was struck shortly after the light turned green.
“The light turned green, but then all of a sudden, after the motorcycle went off first, we heard a bang,” said CM, who witnessed the crash while on her way to work at Gulf Coast News.
When M stopped to help, she saw the motorcyclist lying on the ground, and the motorcycle smoking from the impact.
“Not like it was on fire, but it was just smoking,” she said.
Before first responders arrived, someone at the scene attempted to perform CPR on the victim.
“Someone else was really trying to save his life,” M said. “All I did was my best to make a phone call.”
Fort Myers police confirmed the victim was a 19-year-old man. His name has not yet been released.
Emergency crews quickly arrived and shut down Winkler Avenue from Metro Parkway to Evans Avenue for several hours during the investigation.
A silver BMW with heavy passenger-side damage was found in the grass near the Village Creek Apartments. Police believe the vehicle was involved in the crash.
JC, who lives nearby, said he saw the damaged car and the police presence outside his home.
“I see the damage on the car. In my mind, he [the driver] was flying. I have a motorcycle. I know what it looks like,” C said.
He also saw officers combing the area.
“Nobody stays on the streets forever. Whatever he’s going to, he’s going to show up. They’re going to find him,” he said.
Fort Myers police say the driver of the BMW fled the scene and has not been located. No arrests have been made.
Reflecting on the tragic morning, M said she did what she could.
“Even if I wasn’t the one who was helping perform CPR, all I know is that I did my best and called 911,” she said. “The next best thing I did was just pray. All I did was pray for the man.”
This is a developing story.
