2 arrests made within hours of 23-year-old’s deadly shooting in Lake City

A 23-year-old man was killed Monday night in a shooting in Lake City, police said. Within hours, Lake City police had two men in custody, charged with homicide.

The Lake City Police Department said officers responded just before 10 p.m. Monday to NW Ashley Street after a call that someone had been shot.

They found a witness performing CPR on Cristopher Alid Cruz Aleman, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics and officers took over, but Aleman died from his injuries.

Lake City detectives and State Attorney’s Office investigators quickly spoke with Aleman’s family and possible witnesses and identified two persons of interest.

The SAO investigators, along with deputies from Columbia and Suwannee counties and FDLE special agents, helped Lake City police find Justin Torres, 26, and Kendall Doty, 25.

The two men were interviewed and taken into custody without incident. They were charged with homicide.

“The first 24 hours after this tragic incident, hundreds of hours of manpower were put into this investigation and arrests were made,” said Lake City Chief of Police Gerald Butler. “I would like to reassure the citizens of Lake City this incident was not a random act of violence. Mr. Cruz Aleman was the specific target of these two individuals.”

Butler also thanked State Attorney John Durrett, Sheriff Mark Hunter, Sheriff Emery Gainey and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad, Sheriff Sam St. John, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the men and women of those agencies for their help in investigating and arresting Torres and Doty.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Lake City Police Department at 386-752-4343 and speak with Detective Collins.
