A 20-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman suffered critical injuries Sunday afternoon when the SUV the man was driving flipped onto the woman’s car in the oncoming lane of Normandy Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the man and a 20-year-old woman who was riding in his SUV were headed west on Normandy Boulevard around 3 p.m., when the SUV started to sideswipe a raised concrete barrier on the north shoulder west of Cecil Airport.
The impact sent the SUV flipping into the oncoming lane, where it landed on top of a car headed eastbound and was then hit by another SUV that was traveling behind the car, troopers said.
The 35-year-old Jacksonville woman driving the car was taken to HCA Orange Park trauma center with critical injuries, the report said.
The driver of the SUV that overturned also suffered critical injuries, and his passenger was seriously injured.
A 29-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man in the other SUV were seriously injured, but a 2-year-old boy in their vehicle suffered only minor injuries, according to the report. All three are from Starke.
Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt or was in a proper child restraint, troopers reported.
After the crash, residents raised concerns with News4JAX about the dangerous stretch of road that has been made more treacherous by recent construction.
