2 facing vehicular homicide charges after deadly crash in Cape Coral

A woman was charged with vehicular homicide after Cape Coral police say she was street racing at speeds of more than 125 mph and killed a man.

AZ, 28, was wanted in connection with a crash that happened on July 19, 2024, on Pine Island Road at approximately 1:40 a.m. She surrendered to the Lee County jail on May 13.

According to Cape Coral Police Department documents, police said Z and another driver, CM, 22, were seen racing each other on nearby traffic cameras right before the crash. According to the report, they reached speeds between 125 and 129 miles per hour.

Z, who was driving a BMW, and M, who was driving an Audi, then crashed into a KIA, which was driving significantly slower.

According to the documents, the driver of the KIA was on Pine Island Road, turning off Santa Barbara Boulevard when the crash sent his car into a water-filled ditch.

The man driving the KIA, AA, 52, died after being transported to Cape Coral Hospital. A relative of Almeda said he had four children.

According to the report, DNA from the airbags of the BMW and Audi placed both Z and M behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

According to the arrest warrant, M and Z both face one count of vehicular homicide, a felony of the second degree.

Court records show Cape Coral police arrested M the day of the crash for DUI.

He pled nolo contendere to a lesser charge of Willful and Wanton Reckless driving in February.

A judge sentenced M to 6 months of probation, DUI school and random alcohol tests.

M has not been arrested yet for vehicular homicide. Gulf Coast News has reached out to the State Attorney’s Office to ask if they have signed a warrant for his arrest.
