2 hospitalized following 7-vehicle crash on I-75 in Sarasota: Florida Highway Patrol

Two people were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle crash involving seven cars on I-75 on Monday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol said around 10:35 a.m., a 35-year-old Punta Gorda man traveling northbound on I-75 swerved to avoid tire debris in the road, traveling into the shoulder.

When he swerved, he collided with a vehicle belonging to a tire company parked on the shoulder of the roadway, who FHP said was changing the tire for a disabled car also parked on the shoulder.

Following this collision, another driver, an 18-year-old Punta Gorda man, swerved to avoid the tire in the road, also striking the disabled vehicle that was getting the tire change, according to officials.

Due to the teen’s sudden swerve, another vehicle made a sudden stop, causing the two cars behind to crash.

FHP said the first driver and his 34-year-old passenger were taken to a Sarasota hospital with serious injuries. The teen driver suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
