A deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Palm City shut down all northbound lanes on Monday afternoon, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened just after 3 p.m. near the 132-mile marker, just before Exit 133 for Martin Downs Boulevard, according to Florida 511.
As of this writing, all lanes have reopened.
Two people were killed, and Martin County Fire Rescue said its firefighter-paramedics transported one person with traumatic injuries by ground to the hospital. Florida Highway Patrol is also on the scene.
Officials have not yet released details about what led up to the crash or the identities of those involved.
The closure caused major delays for drivers. Traffic was backed up to about mile marker 129 as investigators worked the scene and crews cleared the roadway.
The crash is the latest in what has been an especially deadly stretch on Martin County roads. According to the sheriff’s office, it marks the fifth fatal traffic crash investigated in the county over the last four days.
One of those crashes happened Saturday morning on SW Allapattah Road, where a head-on collision killed a 31-year-old Stuart man and a 63-year-old Indiantown man. Florida Highway Patrol said the two vehicles collided head-on, killing both drivers. Neither vehicle had passengers.
With two people killed in Monday’s Turnpike crash, Martin County has now recorded five traffic fatalities in just four days.
Drivers heading north on the Turnpike should avoid the area and find alternate routes until the roadway reopens.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
