The Winter Haven Police Department (WHPD) said a two-year-old girl was playing near her driveway on her birthday when she was hit and killed by a car backing into the driveway.
Police said the toddler was playing near the driveway of her home located in the 600 block of Avenue G SE in Winterhaven, at approximately 1:55 p.m. on Nov. 23.
WHPD said a visitor arriving at the home, driving a black Tesla, started backing into the driveway and did not see the child. The Tesla struck the child as the mother stood a short distance away, per the report.
Despite attempts from first responders to save the child, she was pronounced deceased at a hospital at approximately 3:30 p.m., per police.
Police said the driver of the Tesla was cooperative with investigators, and neither impairment nor foul play appear to be factors in this case.
This is an ongoing investigation.
