21-year-old Arcadia woman pleads no contest to attempted murder charges

A 21-year-old Arcadia woman pleaded no contest this week to attempted murder charges stemming from a 2021 shooting, court records show.

Alexa Biviana Avilez was 18-years-old when she was arrested on July 20, 2021. She was originally charged with four counts of attempted murder.

Victor Cervantes, 17 at the time, was also arrested in connection to the shooting, which happened July 17, 2021.

DeSoto County authorities reported Cervantes shot into a vehicle near S.W. Hillsborough Avenue, injuring all three occupants. Detectives responded to DeSoto Memorial Hospital that day for a report of three patients who were being treated for gunshot wounds.

Victims told detectives they were in a car when Cervantes pulled up next to them in another car and began shooting.

Cervantes was booked on attempted murder charges at DeSoto County Jail and was later transported to a juvenile detention facility in Manatee County.

Avilez was arrested two days later.

Detectives also arrested and charged Alexis Cervantes, 14, that same week.

Avilez was found guilty and sentenced to three years in the Florida Department of Corrections system, with 68 days credit for time served, court records show. She was also sentenced to two years of community control after her prison sentence, followed by one year of probation.
