A party at a DeLand residence turned violent early Sunday when a man was injured after being shot following a physical altercation, according to a news release.
DeLand police said they responded to a shooting at a residence at 610 North Kentucky Avenue around 2:58 a.m.
According to the release, officers found a man with two gunshot wounds.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old D. G. S., was located at the scene and was taken into custody.
Detectives said the homeowner had been hosting a large gathering when the S and the victim—who were known to each other—began drinking and arguing.
According to the release, “the suspect began antagonizing the victim.”
The victim eventually challenged S. to a fight, prompting the suspect to retrieve a firearm from his vehicle. After the two engaged in “mutual combat,” S. shot the victim twice, police said.
Police said the victim was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment, but did not provide any additional information on his condition.
S. was transported to the Volusia County Jail and is being held without bond.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the DeLand Police Criminal Investigation Division or submit a tip online here.
The investigation is ongoing.
