Three people were found dead after an airboat capsized near the Kissimmee River on Monday, officials said.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said a total of seven people were on the airboat when the incident happened. They had been traveling to the Kissimmee River from the Istokpoga Canal in Highlands County.
The boat began taking on water after making a turn into a deeper section, and all seven occupants went overboard, according to officials.
Four were able to return to the shore safely. However, three were missing.
The FWC and other Highlands County first responders immediately launched a search, which stretched into the afternoon, and all three of the missing occupants were later found dead.
“The FWC would like to express its deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the victims,” a FWC spokesperson said.
The victims have not yet been named.
