A sedan swerving to avoid a box that fell off a pickup left I-75 north of Gainesville and collided with a tree Saturday morning.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, a 25-year-old Gainesville man driving a sedan was driving north on I-75 near mile marker 390 at 10:24 a.m. when he swerved to avoid a large box containing an AC coil that fell off a pickup driven by 57-year-old Gainesville man.
The sedan left the road and collided with a tree on the east shoulder of I-75.
According to an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) release, ACFR responded, along with the Alachua County Sherriff’s Office, and extracted the driver using the ‘Jaws of Life.’
UF Health ShandsCair airlifted the driver to a local trauma center. The driver is in serious condition.
Emergency responders transported the other two passengers in the sedan – a 23-year-old Gainesville woman and a 26-year-old Norfolk, Virginia man – by ambulance. The two passengers are in critical condition. According to the FHP, all the sedan occupants were wearing seatbelts.
