A 38-year-old Jacksonville man died Saturday afternoon in a violent crash on I-295 northbound at Herlong Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the man was headed north around 12:30 p.m. in a pick-up truck in the inside lane, north of Wilson Boulevard, when he changed lanes to the outside lane, lost control and hit a metal guardrail.
According to the crash report, the truck drove through the guardrail, slamming into a concrete pillar of the Herlong Road overpass before catching fire.
The collision separated the cab and bed of the truck, and the mangled remains could be seen on traffic cameras as crews worked to remove the wreckage Saturday afternoon.
The driver died at the scene.
According to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, another crash with injuries was reported around the same time about a mile south on I-295 near Wilson Boulevard.
That crash, which firefighters said was related to the deadly crash, appeared to involve a pick-up truck and possibly one or two other vehicles.
