4 displaced following structure fire in Hernando County

Four people and three pets are without a home after a structure fire in Weeki Wachee.

According to Hernando County Fire Rescue, crews responded to the residential fire in the 7400 block of Madrid Road just before 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found smoke coming from a window on the side of the home. Crews found the fire in a bedroom and quickly extinguished it.

Everyone inside the home safely escaped before crews arrived. However, the fire left the home’s residents displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting them.

No injuries were reported, and the cause was determined to be a child playing with matches, HCFR said.

HCFR reminded the community to keep matches, lighters, and other fire-starting devices out of children’s reach and to educate them on safe use. Also, ensure working smoke detectors are installed in the home.
