A 4-year-old was shot Tuesday evening in a neighborhood near Apopka when two people exchanged gunfire, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened around 6:20 p.m. near East Virgil Street.
Sheriff’s officials said deputies were called to the 400 block of North Park Avenue, where they learned two people were in a gunfight near East Virgil Street.
During the shooting, the child was struck, officials said.
Sheriff’s officials said the child was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
No other details have been released, and an investigation is ongoing.
When News 6 Wednesday visited East Virgil Street—which is located within the Rock Springs Mobile Home Park—we noticed an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy walking door to door to speak to neighbors.
“I was inside and I heard like two gun shots,” 14-year-old neighbor Emmanuel Garcia told reporters Wednesday. “I went to my room and I looked out the window. I saw some guy, he was jumping up and down. And then he hopped into the car. He swerved onto the grass and then he left.”
Tuesday’s shooting was not far from another street in the park, where a 6-year-old child lost his life in January, when an alleged drunk driver killed him.
“We just don’t feel safe here,” said Faye Honeycutt, a neighbor who recalled Emiliano Garcia’s death in January.
