Two dogs have died, and two cats remain accounted for after a house fire in Spring Hill Sunday night.
The Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to a house fire around 8:30 p.m. on the 200 block of Eastpoint Court.
According to crews, a passing motorist noticed smoke coming from the home and called 911.
HCFR arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the front of the home.
“An aggressive offensive strategy was initiated, quickly knocking down the flames while crews simultaneously performed search and rescue,” Hernando County Fire Rescue said.
A total of five people suffered smoke inhalation, with two of them being transferred to a hospital.
According to HCFR, the fire initially started in the kitchen when the homeowners were not home.
The people transported to the hospital were reportedly bystanders attempting to rescue the pets.
“HCFR would like to stress the importance of bystanders and homeowners to NOT enter a building on fire as you risk your own health and safety as well as further increase the complexity of the incident for firefighters,” Hernando County Fire Rescue said.
