6 children thrown from car, 3 adults hurt in North Lauderdale crash

Six children and two adults were thrown from a car and taken to the hospital after a crash in North Lauderdale on Friday morning, authorities said.

A van and a Toyota 4Runner collided before 8 a.m. in the area of Southwest 81st Avenue and Southwest 7th Court.

There were eight people, two adults and six children, that were inside the Toyota and ejected from the vehicle, authorities said.

The children were unrestrained in the vehicle, according to BSO. They did not appear to suffer life-threatening injuries.

More details on their conditions were not provided.

Jason Shopovick said he was driving his work van when the SUV crashed into him.

“The first thing I realized was that there was a bunch of kids, and I guess the car that had 90’d in front of me and had lost control, and they were carrying like three or four kids and laying them on the grass, and it looked like serious injuries,” he said. “Somebody had said it looked like at least two of them got ejected from the car so I don’t think they had car seats or seatbelts.”

Shopovick suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital, BSO said.

“Just some burns from the airbag I guess and some cuts from the dash crushing in,” he said.

Witnesses who said they saw the kids ejected from the SUV described it as a scary scene.

“I heard that there was kids flying out of the car and all kinds of stuff, it was pretty bad,” said Brian Petlyar.

The north and southbound lanes of Southwest 81st Avenue near Southwest Seventh Court were shut down due to the investigation.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
