6-year-old girl is sole survivor of triple fatality crash in Polk County

A 6-year-old girl was the only survivor after an SUV lost control on I-4 Sunday evening and traveled off the highway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The driver, a 60-year-old man, and two passengers, an 83-year-old woman and 60-year-old woman, were all killed in the crash, according to officials. All three were from Tampa.

Troopers said the driver lost control of the SUV while traveling eastbound on I-4 in Polk County. The car then traveled onto the south shoulder of the highway and struck a tree.

The SUV continued traveling up an embankment leading to State Road 570, struck a guardrail and vaulted over the eastbound lanes, officials said. The vehicle came to a stop after striking another tree and overturning.

The 6-year-old girl who survived the crash was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries, according to troopers.

No further information was immediately available.
