61-year-old man hospitalized after being hit by vehicle in Hendry County

A 61-year-old Alva man was airlifted to a hospital after he was hit by a vehicle on State Road 80 west of Grandma’s Boulevard.

The crash happened at approximately 6:17 p.m. in Hendry County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a trash bag flew off a trailer connected to a Ram pickup truck. The driver pulled into the inside shoulder and partially blocked the inside lane with its hazard lights on.

A Toyota was heading westbound on State Road 80 and didn’t move over for the pickup, according to FHP.

The passenger in the pickup exited the vehicle to grab the trash bag in the roadway. Troopers said the front of the Toyota hit the man, passenger side mirror and trailer.

The Alva man was transported via Bayflite to a trauma hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the FHP news release.

FHP said the driver of the Toyota remained on scene and there are no criminal charges currently.

The crash remains under investigation.
