80-year-old killed after driver has medical emergency, goes wrong way on US-301: FHP

An 80-year-old woman was killed in a crash Monday after authorities said a driver suffered a medical emergency and began going the wrong way on US-301 in Hillsborough County.

The crash happened just before noon on Monday, Oct. 20, near the intersection of US-301 and Harney Baptist Church Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a 67-year-old Riverview woman who was driving a Nissan Altima began traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of US-301 due to a medical emergency.

She then got into a head-on collision with a Toyota Corolla that had been traveling the correct way on the highway.

A passenger in the Toyota Corolla, an 80-year-old Valrico woman, was taken to a hospital, where she later died, officials said.

The Riverview woman and the driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 74-year-old Valrico woman, were also taken to nearby hospitals. Authorities said both women’s injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.
