90-year-old man arrested for striking Vero Beach police officer with his car

A 90-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly struck a Vero Beach police officer who was conducting traffic control for a city half marathon event on Sunday.

According to the arrest affidavit, while conducting traffic control at Ocean Drive and Beachland Boulevard, the officer attempted to stop a blue sedan from entering the intersection because it posed a danger to the runners. The driver, identified as 90-year-old BC, refused to stop and struck the officer multiple times with his vehicle. C then drove away.

A different officer later located the vehicle at Beachland Blvd. and State Road A1A and initiated a traffic stop. After being ordered to exit the vehicle, C refused and threatened to spit on the officer. Another officer arrived, and the two of them proceeded to pull C out of his car and place him into handcuffs.

C was booked into Indian River County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer, obstruction without violence, reckless driving, and fleeing and eluding with disregard for safety and property. He was released on a $45,000 bond.
