At 93 years old, a man from Ocala faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder after Marion County Sheriff’s deputies say he tried to kill his wife, twice.
According to the arrest report, deputies responded to the home of Helmut Lockner, 93, on reports of a domestic battery incident on Saturday.
The victim, Lockner’s wife of 60 years, told deputies the couple were sitting in the living room watching TV. Lockner complained of pain and said he wanted to die.
Lockner walked behind his wife and put a rope around her neck. The victim was able to slip her hand between the rope and her neck to free herself.
She ran to the patio to call 911. The dispatcher could hear Lockner state, “You can die with me.”
She told investigators that Lockner had tried to kill her two weeks ago by placing a pillow over her head. She was able to get him to stop and she thought he wouldn’t try to hurt her again.
“I‘ve been at the sheriff’s office for five and a half years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Zach Moore, a sheriff’s office spokesperson.
Lockner told deputies he is dying and did not want to leave his wife alone. After killing his wife with the rope, he planned to hang himself.
“What we do know is that we’re very fortunate that this victim was able to fight him off and preserve her own life and that she’s still here with us,” Moore added.
Lockner was booked into the Marion County Jail on two counts of first-degree attempted murder. No bond is set as of this report.
