96-year-old driver dies following crash on Highway 29 in Escambia County

A 96-year-old Pensacola man died following a crash Wednesday morning in Escambia County.

It happened around 8:15 a.m. at Highway 29 and Hood Drive.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the 96-year-old man was driving south in his SUV in the left turn lane of Highway 29 near Hood Drive.

Meanwhile, a sedan — driven by a 33-year-old Pensacola woman — was traveling northbound on Highway 29, approaching the SUV.

FHP says the SUV failed to yield the right-of-way to the sedan and attempted to negotiate a left turn in front of it. The front of the sedan then struck the right side of the SUV.

The 96-year-old man was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The 33-year-old woman was hospitalized with serious injuries.

No further details were released.
