A bicyclist was hit and killed while crossing Beach Boulevard on Thursday afternoon, marking the 60th traffic fatality this year.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, just before 4 p.m., a man in his 60s on a bicycle attempted to cross Beach Boulevard near Forest Boulevard.

A BMW was headed east on Beach Blvd. when the bicyclist was hit, JSO said.

The Fire Rescue Department responded to provide life-saving measures, but the man died.

The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with police. Police said there were no signs of impairment.

Eastbound lanes of Beach Boulevard remained blocked for at least another hour. Drivers were urged to use J Turner Butler Boulevard or Atlantic Boulevard as alternative routes.

This is the 5th traffic fatality involving a bicyclist.
