A 70-year-old bicyclist critically injured in a crash in Boca Raton on Thursday morning was not wearing the necessary safety equipment, according to traffic investigators.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said that at around 5:54 a.m., North Carolina resident Roger Vale was critically injured at the intersection of Military Trail and SW 18th Street in Boca Raton.
The crash involved a Volkswagen Atlas, driven by a 47-year-old Boca Raton resident, which was stopped at a red light heading southbound on Military Trail, according to the arrest report. As the light turned green, the Volkswagen proceeded into the intersection. At the same time, investigators said Vale ran the red light while traveling westbound on SW 18th Street in the bicycle lane, colliding with the front driver’s side of the Volkswagen.
Vale was not wearing any safety gear at the time of the crash and sustained critical injuries, according to traffic investigators. He was taken to Delray Medical Center for emergency treatment.
The PBSO report said the driver of the Volkswagen was uninjured and was using a seatbelt. No alcohol or drugs were reported to be involved in the incident.
