One man is dead and another is hospitalized after a motorcycle crash in Polk County.

At around 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a crash on Green Pond Road near San Juan Avenue, where two motorcyclists had collided.

Two groups of motorcycle riders were traveling in opposite directions, one led by a 72-year-old Mascotte man, who drifted over the center line while navigating a curve.

The 72-year-old struck the lead bike in the group coming from the opposite direction, ejecting both riders.

CPR was being performed on the man by witnesses when Polk County Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, at which point they took over life-saving efforts. Officials said the man was not wearing a helmet and died of his injuries.

The rider who was struck, a 61-year-old Tampa man, suffered broken bones and a collapsed lung in the crash and remains in the hospital.
