The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a silver SUV that crashed into a retention pond off Interstate 75 near Chaparel Drive in Bonita Springs around 2 a.m. Monday.
The driver has not yet been located.
People living nearby, like Ashleigh and Jim Jastatt, said it’s not the first crash they’ve seen on the interstate outside their home.
“There are a lot of drivers that take that turn right on I-75, so it is an accident-prone location, but I’ve never seen a vehicle in the lake before,” Jastatt said.
Cassandra Brooks also said this is a dangerous area for drivers.
“There have been other very serious accidents right here in this spot,” Brooks said. “People have been airlifted in the past, and they people just need to be careful.”
Meanwhile, the Jastatts said they’re still processing what happened in their neighborhood.
“You always hear it on the news, and it’s, you know, it’s never going to happen to you,” Jastatt said. “It’s always interesting when it’s like, actually in your front yard.”
FHP said they are still investigating what ran that driver off the interstate and into that pond.
This is an active investigation.
