A police investigation is underway after shots rang out in downtown Miami, leaving a man dead and sending a woman to the hospital.

The incident occurred near Northwest First Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Street, near the railroad tracks east of the Brightline station around 5:00 a.m., Wednesday.

According to Miami Fire Rescue, units responded to the area in reference to a woman being shot in her legs.

The 911 caller is a friend of the victim and she was able to assist investigators in zeroing on the woman’s exact location as first responders struggled to find her because of the dense cluster of high-rises in the area.

“The female that was shot in the legs called a friend, who responds to the scene, and he calls 911 and reports it to the police. That’s what led us directly to where she was at,” said a police official.

The victim was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

“I’m going to guess it was about 15 shots. The whole clip, but the thing is there were periods of time where there was breaks, so like five, six seconds shot again,” said a witness.

7News captured the removal of the woman from a tent and rescue crews loading her into an ambulance to be transported to a hospital. Her condition is unclear.

As investigators were taping off the area with crime scene tape, a man was found in the bushes nearby and was pronounced dead on the scene by first responders.

Officials said they have not located a weapon.

“We haven’t located a gun as of right now and we’re investigating. We did find casings which will help us in our investigation. Obviously, the weather is not cooperating with us because we have to preserve the all the evidence that’s on scene,” said a police official.

The circumstances surrounding the investigation are unclear.
