Report: Gulf Breeze woman with dementia arrested for hammer attack on husband

Deputies arrested a 79-year-old Gulf Breeze woman with dementia this week for a hammer attack on her husband, according to an arrest report.

EDC was booked into Santa Rosa County Jail on Monday on a felony domestic violence charge of aggravated battery. She remains in jail on $2,500 bond.

The incident happened Monday evening at C’ home, where she lives with her husband.

According to the report, upon arrival, deputies found C in the front yard with blood running down her arm from a skin tear on her elbow.

“[C] stated that the man in her residence was trying to harm her, so she hit him with a hammer,” deputies wrote in the arrest report. “I asked why she hit [her husband], and she said not [her husband], she doesn’t know who that man inside is.”

Deputies noted in the report that the victim was in fact her husband, who she had “once again mistaken for an intruder.” They added that C has a dementia diagnosis and “often doesn’t recognize her husband, believing him to be an intruder and has armed herself in the past with scissors, kitchen knifes, and various objects from the home.” Since July 2024, deputies have responded to the home 11 times for “various incidents stemming from [C’] medical condition,” according to the report.

The report states deputies went inside the home to find the husband bleeding from a large contusion on top of his head.

The husband told deputies that C had began yelling at him and attacked him with a pair of scissors, according to the report. He took the scissors from her, but she then went to the garage and grabbed a hammer.

“[The husband] attempted to keep his distance from [C] with his walking cane, but she grabbed it and then swung the hammer at him, striking him in the head,” deputies wrote in the report, adding that the husband was eventually able to get the hammer from C and call 911.

The report states EMS treated C on scene, as well as the husband, who declined hospital treatment.

“By the time EMS had finished treating both parties, [C] had already forgotten what had occurred,” deputies wrote in the report.

According to the report, deputies arrested C on the aggravated battery charge “based on the circumstances and physical evidence at the scene.”

Her next court date is set for June 19.

Court records show that Collins does not have a prior criminal record in Santa Rosa County.
