Man in custody after shooting at Orlando homeless shelter

Man in custody after shooting at Orlando homeless shelter

A man is in custody after a shooting Friday afternoon at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission, marking what the shelter said is its first shooting in its 77-year history.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. as two men were checking into the shelter and going through metal detectors. Witnesses say an argument between the men quickly escalated into a physical fight, then gunfire.

“I heard the shots and I ran. I got outta there, man,” said SH, who was nearby when the shooting happened.

JS said he saw the suspect holding a gun.

“I turned around, saw him holding the gun. I was wondering why he had the gun, but I ran for my life,” S said. “I told the guy at the front office to call the cops, and he did.”

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as people scrambled for safety.

“I got knocked down on the ground by everybody running,” said J H.

Police swarmed the area shortly after the shooting.

A.J. K, another man at the shelter, said he believed the two men were friends.

“They were talking for a minute, then the dude swung on him,” K said. “The dude slammed him on the ground, and the dude got up, trying to get his stuff. He ran to the car and everybody started running.”

Shelter officials said the victim ran to the on-site urgent clinic before being transported to a hospital by ambulance. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

“One guy went in the ambulance, and another one went in the cop car,” K said.

No further details about the identities of those involved or the condition of the victim have been released.
