Port Charlotte man arrested for attacking woman with Stanley cup

A Port Charlotte man is accused of violently attacking a woman with a metal Stanley cup.

Around 3 a.m. Monday, Charlotte County deputies said MR knocked a woman to the ground, got on top of her and beat her head with a metal Stanley cup multiple time. The woman was bleeding.

This happened in a driveway off Laurel Avenue.

SJ was awakened by frantic banging on her front door and her doorbell ringing nonstop.

“That’s a first for me,” she said. “I’ve never had somebody demand I call 911. Never had anyone trying to break my door down, trying to get away from someone.”

“I didn’t even think to not open the door. I was like, somebody is in trouble. So I opened the door, and there was this younger woman standing there in what looked like her pajamas, ” J said.

“She didn’t have any shoes, purse, phone, wallet, nothing except her Apple Watch, and she was screaming that there was some guy down the street beating his wife to death with a Stanley mug, and that he had swung at her on the way out and that she needed us to call 911,” said J. “We just kept her in the house for a while we waited for the cops to show up,” J said.

When deputies arrived, R reportedly ran into his house, climbed into the attic, and then slipped out the back door and fled into nearby woods. He then tried to escape by calling an Uber, but deputies stopped him in the car and took him into custody.

Neighbor K D said it looked like R had jumped his fence during the escape. He found size 12 “Woody-themed Toy Story Crocs” in his backyard.

“My birdbath was knocked over,” D said. “And I just found these super dope shoes but they’re not my size. Size too small.”

R was booked into the Charlotte County Jail but has since bonded out. He may have been trying to escape deputies because he had warrant related to more than $20,000 in fraud charges.

R now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
