An early morning fire resulted in extensive smoke damage to a home and the loss of five cats on Tuesday in Escambia County.

Escambia County Fire Rescue units responded to the blaze at the 2000 block of Coral Creek Drive at 1:34 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke emanating from the garage of a single-story home, where a vehicle was ablaze.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire, bringing it under control by 1:55 a.m.

Although the fire damage was limited to the vehicle, the garage and home suffered significant smoke damage.

During a search of the premises, 10 cats were discovered and removed.

Despite immediate care provided by ECFR and EMS personnel, five of the cats did not survive.

An investigation by ECFR determined that an electrical issue with the vehicle in the garage sparked the fire.

Assistance was provided by Escambia County EMS.
