A teenage boy was killed and another was injured Sunday after a dispute among three boys escalated into a shooting in a Port Charlotte neighborhood.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said the teens got into an argument earlier in the day along Hernando Avenue when gunfire broke out. One boy was shot in the leg and taken to a hospital for treatment. Another was fatally wounded.
Sheriff Bill Prummell said investigators are still trying to determine what led to the altercation. “We have had three teenage boys who got into a dispute. During the dispute, there was gunfire exchanged,” he said. “One of the males was shot and unfortunately succumbed to his wounds.”
Deputies responded to the area around 5 p.m., after neighbors reported hearing what they initially believed were fireworks. By 6 p.m., the street was lined with emergency vehicles, and detectives and forensic units had established a command center nearby.
Several neighbors and family members living at the home where the shooting occurred were seen being questioned by investigators. Many residents stood outside, visibly concerned, as deputies collected evidence and canvassed the area.
“We’re still trying to put all the pieces together and find out exactly what this dispute was over,” Prummell said, adding that updates would be shared as the investigation progresses.
CCSO said the identity of the teen who died had not yet been confirmed Saturday night. The other two boys involved are accounted for.
This is a developing story.
