A BMW driver was driving more than 40 mph over the speed limit and at nearly twice the legal blood alcohol limit when he caused a January crash in Margate that left three people dead and two others hurt, according to the city’s police department.
JTA, 26, of Fort Lauderdale, wasn’t even supposed to be driving in the first place, police say. He’s facing more than a dozen criminal charges, including multiple counts of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter, following his arrest on Thursday.
The deadly wreck happened just before midnight on Jan. 15 at North Rock Island Road and Royal Palm Boulevard.
According to an arrest report from the Margate Police Department, vehicle data showed that Anderson was driving his BMW 86 mph in a 45 mph zone when he ran a red light and slammed into a silver Honda, killing three people: BSWN, 24, DCE, 47, and NS, 26.
He also injured his passenger, who told police she had been drinking with him that night, he had been driving “way too fast” and said she told him “multiple times to slow down and stop driving like this,” according to the report.
Police said A’s blood alcohol content came back at 0.152%, nearly twice the 0.08% legal limit. He also had THC in his system, they said.
Authorities said his license had been suspended since Valentine’s Day 2022.
As of Thursday, Anderson was being held in the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail facility, online records show.
