Driver from Alabama dies at scene of fatal collision on Florida Turnpike

An Alabama man was pronounced dead at the scene of a fatal collision with a semi on the Florida Turnpike.

A 22-year-old male driver and a 23-year-old female passenger in a 2025 Hyundai Elantra were traveling on the Florida Turnpike south of Hancock Road near Minneola around 10:16 p.m. Thursday, according to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol. A 45-year-old man from Naples was ahead of them in a 2017 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer.

As the semi slowed down for traffic ahead, the Hyundai did not. This led to the front of the Hyundai hitting the back of the semi. The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The semi driver was uninjured, so he was not taken to a hospital and stayed at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
