A Leesburg man was arrested after hitting his girlfriend’s friend in the head with a blunt wooden object for interfering with an argument.
An officer responded to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, located at 600 E Dixie Ave., at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. A friend of 51-year-old WJD’s girlfriend had been struck in the head with a blunt wooden object.
Upon arrival, the officer met with the friend who stated she had gone to the residence to pick up the girlfriend for a planned surgery at UF Health. She saw the girlfriend and D engaged in a verbal argument and told them to stop because it was too early in the morning. D, who looked intoxicated, approached her carrying a large cylindrical wooden object resembling a stick, the report said.
D gave the friend the impression that he intended to hit her with it, so she grabbed it. A brief struggle ensued, and she let go of the object. She was walking away toward her vehicle when he struck her one time on the back of the head with the object. She fell forward, hitting her car as a result, the report said.
Examination of her head revealed a one-inch laceration. UF Health staff advised that she would need staples to close the wound. Additionally, the girlfriend corroborated her friend’s statement, as did a male witness, the report said.
Backup officers then responded to the residence and found Dennis sleeping inside a tent on the property. They did not find the weapon he used, the report said.
D was arrested on charge of aggravated battery (cause bodily harm or disability). He was transported to Lake County Jail to be held without bond.
