Dania Beach woman beat and took over $100K from elderly tenant with dementia: BSO

Dania Beach woman beat and took over $100K from elderly tenant with dementia: BSO

A Dania Beach woman was arrested after she allegedly beat an elderly tenant with dementia and took more than $100,000 from him over the period of a decade, authorities said.

AML, 61, was arrested by the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Friday on charges of battery on a person 65 or older and exploitation of elderly for $100,000 or more, records showed.

According to arrest reports, the 78-year-old tenant said he moved in with L in 2014 or 2015 with a verbal agreement that he would pay $800 rent.

The man said L has taken $800 from him every month for the last 10 years, forcing him to write checks and punching him if he didn’t sign them, the reports said.

He also said L would hit him when he doesn’t clean correctly and would take his cell phone which he uses to contact his doctors, and if he didn’t hand the phone over she would smack or punch him, the reports said.

The man said he has not had access to his money for the past 10 years and his only income is the $987 per month he receives from Social Security.

The leftover $187 was supposed to be spent on other expenses including home repairs but on Friday, the dwelling was condemned by the city of Dania Beach, the reports said.

L was also found to be in possession of his checkbook but he said he never gave her power of attorney, the reports said.

He said Lake also took his food stamp card, from which he would receive $160.

The man said he suffers from dementia and had difficulty remembering details and events but said he had been previously hospitalized for injuries he received in a incident involving L, and showed the deputy injuries to his hands and fingers that he said L caused, the reports said.

He said he hadn’t previously reported the incidents because he didn’t want to get L in trouble.

L told investigators she has known the man for over 10 years and that he’s unable to take care of himself, so she took it upon herself to take over his finances, and she said she cooks and provides groceries for him, the reports said.

She said she has done nothing but try and help the man and admitted to hitting him once but said it was only because he looked down her shirt, the reports said.

L was arrested and booked into jail. She later appeared before a judge who set her bond at $5,000.
